A shocking behind-the-scenes story from one of reality TV‘s most iconic shows has finally come to light. Alex Hooser, known to many fans by her birth name Lauren Olsen, is now opening up about a painful chapter of her life that never made it to television — her father’s arrest while she was filming MTV’s Laguna Beach.
In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Hooser revealed that while cameras were capturing her carefree high school days in Orange County, her real life was falling apart. Her father had been arrested due to financial legal trouble. He spent time in jail before eventually being placed on house arrest with an ankle bracelet monitor.
“My whole family life was kind of just falling apart,” Hooser shared emotionally.
What made things even harder was that none of this was shown on the show. Hooser says she kept the situation private on purpose. “I held it close to my heart at that time and I didn’t think it was relevant to put it out there,” she said. Still, her closest friends — including Kristin Cavallari — knew everything.
“Kristin, she’s ride or die. Still is today, no matter what. There was never any judgment or anything. She knew all the things going on, but she just stuck by,” Hooser told PEOPLE.
The friendship has lasted well beyond the show. “Even again, 20 years later we still connect and have a friendship,” Hooser added.
Laguna Beach first aired in 2004 and became a defining show in reality television history. Executive producer Liz Gateley says the show’s magic came from the fact that the cast were real friends — many since the age of six.
“I think just knowing what was going on behind the scenes with people like Alex, they were real friends and I think that’s what we captured,” Gateley said.
Hooser first spoke about her father’s legal troubles in a 2024 interview with Millennial TeaV. Now, the full story is being revisited as part of the reunion special, The Reunion: Laguna Beach, currently streaming on The Roku Channel.
Looking back, Hooser called the experience “pretty traumatic” — even as she appeared happy and carefree on screen.
