Fans of the hit crime series Luther have something exciting to look forward to. Filming for the next movie in the franchise has officially started in the United Kingdom, and actor Idris Elba has been seen back on set playing the famous detective John Luther.
According to the Whats on Netflix, new film will continue the story that began in Luther: The Fallen Sun, which was released on Netflix. That movie followed Luther as he chased a dangerous criminal across Europe. Now the sequel is bringing the action back to London, where the character first became popular.
Early photos and videos from the set show Idris Elba wearing Luther’s signature grey coat while filming dramatic scenes around the city. One action scene reportedly takes place near St. Paul’s Cathedral, where Luther is seen running away from an exploding car. The production team also used fake rain to create the dark and gritty atmosphere the series is known for.
Other filming locations include Parkland Walk and Crouch End in North London, where the crew filmed a nighttime chase scene involving motorcycles. The busy streets and industrial areas of London will once again play an important role in the movie’s story.
The plot details are still mostly secret, but reports suggest that Luther will be investigating a series of violent murders while being hunted by powerful enemies. This means the detective may face danger from several directions at once.
The creative team behind the series is also returning. Neil Cross, who created the original show, has written the script for the new movie. Director Jamie Payne is also expected to return after directing the previous film.
Several familiar faces may also appear in the sequel, including Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan and Dermot Crowley as Schenk.
Filming is expected to continue until May 2026, and because the movie includes large action scenes and special effects, it will take time to complete editing and post-production.
For now, fans can expect the new Luther movie to arrive on Netflix sometime in 2027.
