Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have officially returned as the iconic Owens sisters, as filming begins for the much-anticipated sequel, “Practical Magic 2.” Kidman shared a heartwarming video on Instagram featuring her and Bullock embracing on set, in front of a headstone in a cemetery. The caption read: “The witches are back. Owens sisters’ first day on set!”
The original 1998 film, based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, followed Sally and Gillian Owens, two sisters who descend from a long line of witches and struggle with a powerful family curse that causes the men they love to die tragically. The sequel will reportedly follow a later part of Hoffman’s book series, though the full plot remains under wraps.
Returning alongside Bullock and Babygirl movie star Kidman are Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, reprising their beloved roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances. New cast members include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
The film is being directed by Susanne Bier, known for her work on Bird Box and The Perfect Couple. Both Bullock and Kidman have worked with her previously, making this collaboration feel like, as Kidman puts it, “the perfect triangle.”
Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film, has teamed up with Georgia Pritchett (Succession) to pen the screenplay. Both Bullock and Kidman are also serving as producers, along with Denise Di Novi, who was part of the original production team.
However, not all familiar faces will return. Evan Rachel Wood, who played Bullock’s daughter in the first film, revealed she won’t appear in the sequel. “I offered my services… I was told they are recasting,” she shared on Instagram, expressing her sadness over not rejoining the cast.
“Practical Magic 2” is set to be released in theaters on September 18, 2026. Fans of the original film can finally look forward to more sisterly magic, family bonds, and supernatural adventure as the Owens women prepare to cast their spells once again.
