Paapa Essiedu Falls Off Broom While Filming Quidditch Scene for HBO’s Harry Potter Series

Filming is currently underway for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter” series, and new behind-the-scenes details are giving fans a fun look at what production has been like. Actor Paapa Essiedu, who will play Severus Snape, recently shared a surprising moment from the set — he actually fell off a broom while filming a Quidditch scene.

Essiedu spoke about the experience during a live conversation event hosted by Esquire Editor-in-Chief Teo van den Broeke. While talking about the series, he revealed that filming the magical sports scenes has been both exciting and challenging.

The actor explained that the production team has built large and detailed sets, including a full Quidditch stadium, to bring the wizarding world to life. He described the set design as “completely insane,” with a mix of mechanical rigs, wires, and green screen effects used to create the flying sequences.

During filming, Essiedu had to ride a broom that was attached to a large mechanical arm. This setup allows actors to safely simulate flying through the air. However, things did not go exactly as planned during one take.

Essiedu shared that while filming a scene, he lost his balance and slipped off the broom, ending up hanging in the air. He said he was about three meters above the ground when the moment happened. Even though it could have been scary, the actor described it as more embarrassing than dangerous.

What made the situation even more awkward, according to Essiedu, was the reaction from the crew. He said that no one laughed when it happened. Instead, everyone stayed completely silent and serious while watching him hang there, which made the moment feel even more uncomfortable.

The story gives fans a clear look at how complex and physical filming can be for the series. Even with advanced technology, actors still need to perform difficult scenes that require balance, timing, and focus.

Essiedu also shared his excitement about being part of the Harry Potter universe. Speaking at the event, he said the show is going to be “fantastic” and that he feels lucky to explore the story in a longer format, which allows for deeper character development.

The new HBO series aims to retell the story from the books in a more detailed way, with more time to explore characters and scenes compared to the original films. Filming is still ongoing, and more updates are expected as production continues.

For now, Essiedu’s behind-the-scenes moment shows that even in a world of magic, filming can come with real-life mishaps — including falling off a flying broom.
